The Planning Department is responsible for assisting and advising the public, government agencies and Town Council on matters related to the planning and general development of the Town through the land use planning process. Through land use planning the Town establishes goals and objectives for growth and development including the orderly and efficient provision of services and resources in its Official Plan.

The Planning Department reviews and processes applications to develop lands and provides recommendations to Council regarding plans of subdivision, and proposed amendments to the Official Plan and Zoning By-law. The Department also provides recommendations to the Committee of Adjustment on applications for consents and minor variances.

The Planning Department is also responsible for reporting on the implementation of the Town's Strategic Plan, Building on the Foundation and the administration of the Zoning By-law with respect to the interpretation of permitted uses, and zoning provisions such as setbacks and lot coverage.

The Planning Department responds to general enquiries related to land use in the Town as well as specific enquires related to proposed development applications. Public comment is solicited on all planning applications and changes to the Official Plan. Citizen participation is an important part of the planning process in New Tecumseth and is essential to good planning.
